Getting indexed on Google: a checklist for small businesses

Sitemaps, structured data, Search Console setup, and the technical basics most websites still get wrong.

Getting your business website to appear on Google is less about clever tricks and more about doing the basics correctly. Most small business sites fail at the technical foundation, not the content.

Start with the essentials: a unique title and meta description on every page, a working sitemap.xml, a robots.txt that allows crawlers, and verification in Google Search Console. These four steps alone put you ahead of most local competitors.

Add structured data for your organization, address, and services. Make sure mobile rendering is clean and pages load quickly. Use real headings — H1, H2, H3 — that describe the content, not the design.

Finally, write content that actually answers the questions your customers are asking. Google has spent a decade getting better at recognizing genuinely useful pages, and there is no shortcut that beats that.
